igus gives HudRail a helping hand in its Railway Challenge

A team of undergraduate mechanical and electrical engineers from the University of Huddersfield competed in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Railway Challenge, at the Stapleford Miniature Railway, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

Up against teams of students, apprentices and graduates from other UK universities and industry, the HudRail team had to design and build a miniature (10¼" gauge) railway locomotive. The train then had to compete in a number of track-based and presentation challenges including…..

Retrofit your way to Industry 4.0

Here Jonathan Wilkins, marketing director of obsolete components supplier EU Automation discusses issues to consider when retrofitting in your migration to Industry 4.0.

There are lots of nonsensical phrases in the English language, one of the most common being 'you can't have your cake and eat it too'. Put simply, this phrase means that you can't have it both ways. However, I'm about to prove this is incorrect, as it's possible to retrofit while migrating to Industry 4.0. As industrial plant managers struggle with aging infrastructure and strict regulations, they're looking for cost-effective ways to upgrade. With industry trends such as Industry 4.0 on the rise, many engineers may consider retrofitting a step backwards.

TE Connectivity presented Smart I/O module at SPS IPC Drives

TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity and sensors, presented new products for Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 applications at SPS IPC Drives 2016.. These included TE's new IoT OmniGate I/O module, which can be used to set up a communication path from the machine to the cloud without impairing the performance of the control network. Information from sensors and actuators can thus be captured, filtered, prepared and then transferred to IT systems.

Creaform metrology equipment speeds up
production for super-car manufacturer Koenigsegg

The Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a brand defined by painstaking precision and hand-crafting that results in an end product that most of us can only ever dream of owning.  The entire business is built around enhancing vehicle performance and streamlining productivity, something that has undoubtedly been achieved considering the cars have a 0-100mph time that is shorter than most of us can pronounce Koenigsegg!

Linkam launches a new platform to
replicate large scale freeze drying systems

Market leaders in temperature controlled microscopy and established manufacturers of advanced freeze drying microscopes, Linkam Scientific Instruments, offer its new FDVS platform, a lyophilisation system to replicate large scale freeze drying processes.

Replicating large scale industrial freeze drying processes as smaller test runs is an effective way to save time, cut costs and perfect the technicalities of an operation run. With this in mind, Linkam engineers have created the new Freeze Drying Vial System - FDVS.

Oxy-fuel safety: It's every-ones responsibility

Oxy-fuel processes such as heating, cutting, brazing and welding create a potential danger from flames, sparks and intense heat. Despite these hazards, millions of people work accident free. By design, manufacturers build safe equipment. This decreases the likelihood of a potential incident. However, good oxy-fuel operators know that their own safety, as well as the safety of those around them, depends on proper and responsible use of oxy-fuel equipment. This article provides guidelines for proper set-up and shutdown procedures, as well as technical and safety principles.
